Attorneys Serving Merritt Island, Florida

Easler Law PLLC, serving Merritt Island from our Melbourne office

Easler Law serves Merritt Island clients from our Melbourne office at 508 N Harbor City Blvd. We do not have a Merritt Island office, and we meet in Melbourne or by phone or video.

Merritt Island is an unincorporated community between the Indian River and the Banana River, so most local rules come from Brevard County rather than a city government. Many homes sit on canals or the river, and our work there includes waterfront purchases, docks and seawall questions in contracts, and estate plans for longtime owners.

Frequently Asked Questions About Merritt Island

Who Reviews Zoning Requests on North Merritt Island?

Zoning requests on North Merritt Island go first to the North Merritt Island Dependent Special District Board, created by County Ordinance 98-64. The board has seven elected members and acts in place of the County Planning and Zoning Board for requests inside its area. The district covers the land north of the Barge Canal and south of the NASA Causeway East.

What Are Fortenberry Stormwater Credits on Merritt Island?

The Fortenberry Regional Stormwater Treatment System lets commercial properties within its service area buy stormwater credits instead of building all of their own treatment. The Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency funded the land under a 2009 interlocal agreement, and construction started in 2011. Brevard County decides credit eligibility, and an approved credit lasts for the life of the development.

Does Merritt Island Have a Mayor or City Council?

Merritt Island has no mayor or city council since it remains unincorporated. Laws and services for the island come from the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners, made up of five members elected by district. The Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency and the North Merritt Island Dependent Special District are County bodies with narrower roles.

Which County Commissioner Represents Merritt Island?

As of October 2026, Merritt Island is in Brevard County Commission District 2, represented by Commissioner Tom Goodson. His district office is at the Merritt Island Service Complex, 2575 North Courtenay Parkway, Suite 200, and the phone number is 321-454-6601. District 2 also includes Cocoa, Rockledge, Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach.

What Is the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency?

The Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency is a County redevelopment agency set up on October 4, 1988, under Chapter 163, Part III, Florida Statutes. Its seven directors are appointed by the County Commission to four year terms under Ordinance 88-43. The agency oversees four redevelopment zones and runs programs such as commercial facade grants and a brownfields grant, with staff at 321-454-6610.

Where Is the Sheriff's Office on Merritt Island?

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office East Precinct is located on Merritt Island, with office hours Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The precinct phone number is 321-454-6652. Because the island is unincorporated, the Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement there instead of a city police department.
