How are variances decided in West Melbourne?
West Melbourne uses a two board process for variances, with an advisory recommendation first and a final decision by a separate board.
The West Melbourne Planning and Zoning Board reviews special exceptions and variances and makes recommendations to the Board of Adjustment. It also recommends zoning amendments, site plans over three acres and subdivision plans to the City Council.
The Board of Adjustment hears and decides applications for variances and conditional uses. It also hears appeals alleging error in a decision of the Planning and Zoning Board.
The board has seven members, and at least four must have served on a planning or code enforcement board, as an elected municipal officer or as a planning professional.
