Can property next to West Melbourne be annexed into the city?
Property outside West Melbourne can join the city through annexation only if it is adjacent to the existing city limits, under the process set by state law.
West Melbourne's annexation page explains that a property must be adjacent to the city limits to annex into the city. As of October 2026, the city says most owners who annex see only a slight tax increase, sometimes about $50 a year, because of its low tax rate.
For voluntary annexation, section 171.044, Florida Statutes, requires the land to be contiguous and reasonably compact, with a petition signed by all owners. The city then adopts a nonemergency ordinance to annex the property.
Questions go to the city's Planning and Growth Management Office.
