How can property next to Palm Bay be annexed into the city?
An owner of unincorporated land that touches Palm Bay can petition the City Council for voluntary annexation, and an accepted annexation runs with the land.
Under section 171.044, Florida Statutes, owners of unincorporated property that is contiguous to a city and reasonably compact may petition that city to annex it. The petition must carry the signatures of all owners of the property.
Palm Bay's voluntary annexation application follows Section 172.020 of the city code and asks for a deed and a signed and sealed survey for each parcel. If the City Council accepts the petition, the annexation binds the petitioner and its successors and runs with the land.
Annexation is among the applications the city schedules for public hearings before the Planning and Zoning Board and the City Council. A pre-application meeting with city staff gives owners a chance to talk through the process before filing.
