What public notice is given for a Merritt Island rezoning?
Before a Merritt Island rezoning hearing, the applicant posts a sign on the land and the county mails notice to owners within 500 feet.
Rezonings in unincorporated Brevard, including Merritt Island, require at least two public hearings, according to the county's Rezoning Process page. The application includes a recorded deed, a certified survey or Property Appraiser map, and written authorization from all owners when someone else applies.
No later than 15 days before the Planning and Zoning Board hearing, the applicant posts a sign on the property describing the request. About 10 days before the hearing, the county mails a courtesy notice to owners within 500 feet and publishes a legal ad in Florida Today.
The Planning and Zoning Board, sitting as the Local Planning Agency, makes a recommendation, and the Board of County Commissioners makes the final decision. Commercial or industrial requests also need a wetland survey.
