What does the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency do?
The Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency, known as MIRA, funds projects and business incentives in four designated redevelopment zones on the island.
The Brevard County Commission established the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency in 1989. A seven member board of directors oversees it, created by Ordinance No. 88-43 under section 163.356, Florida Statutes, according to the county MIRA page.
MIRA covers four sub areas: the SR 520 Commercial Core along the Merritt Island Causeway, the SR 3 corridor on Courtenay Parkway, the Barge Canal area and the Cone Road industrial lands. Projects are funded through tax increment financing, grants and donations.
For businesses, MIRA lists a commercial facade program and a brownfields grant program. Eligibility depends on whether a property sits inside one of the four sub areas.
