What is the North Merritt Island Dependent Special District?
North Merritt Island has its own elected advisory board that reviews zoning requests in the district before they reach the Brevard County Commission.
The North Merritt Island Dependent Special District Board was established by Ordinance 98-64 as an elected, seven member advisory board. It acts in place of the county Planning and Zoning Board for requests within the district.
The district covers the area north of the Barge Canal and south of the NASA Causeway East. Board meetings are held at the Merritt Island Service Complex, 2575 N. Courtenay Parkway.
Final rezoning decisions still rest with the Board of County Commissioners, as described on the county's Rezoning Process page. Owners and buyers of North Merritt Island land planning a rezoning or other land use change can expect review by this board first.
