Does a Merritt Island business need a city Business Tax Receipt?
No city receipt applies on Merritt Island, but a business there still needs a Brevard County Business Tax Receipt and a county Zoning Use permit.
Brevard County levies a business tax on businesses operating in the county, and the Tax Collector issues the receipts. Businesses in unincorporated areas, including Merritt Island, contact County Zoning, Environmental Health Services and Development Services before applying.
The Tax Collector's unincorporated area checklist includes the Zoning Use permit application, proof of ownership or a lease, and a copy of any fictitious name registration. Commercial and industrial locations also go through a Building Occupancy Review.
Under section 205.053, Florida Statutes, receipts go on sale July 1 and are due by September 30 each year.
