How do Melbourne homeowners apply for the Florida homestead exemption?
Melbourne homeowners apply with the Brevard County Property Appraiser by March 1, after owning and living in the home as a permanent residence on January 1.
Homestead exemption applications for Melbourne homes are filed with the Brevard County Property Appraiser. The owner must hold title and use the home as a permanent residence on January 1, then apply by March 1 of the year the exemption will apply, as section 196.011, Florida Statutes requires.
The Property Appraiser accepts applications online, by mail or in person at its offices. Once approved, the exemption renews automatically each year as long as ownership and residence stay the same.
